A General Surgeon certified by the American Board of Surgery is one who has acquired knowledge and experience in the following areas: the alimentary tract, the abdomen and its contents, skin and soft tissue, the endocrine system, head and neck surgery, pediatric surgery, surgical critical care, transplantation surgery, trauma/burns, and vascular surgery. Additionally, the General Surgeon is expected to have had preoperative, operative, and postoperative experience in plastic and cardio-thoracic surgery, and must have an understanding of the management of the more common problems in gynecologic, neurologic, orthopedic, and urologic surgery, and of the administration of anesthetic agents.

Dr. Swafford and his wife Stacey have four children: Hallie, Heather, Tanner and Toy. Dr. Swafford has served in the United States Navy as a Navy SEAL and continues to serve as a Navy reservist and Naval Medical Officer.
