Nutrition Tips for Diabetics

Having a well-balanced diet is particularly important for diabetics. Following a healthy meal plan and keeping track of carbohydrates can make a big difference in the overall well-being of a diabetes patient.     If you have diabetes, you may want to consult with your doctor or a dietitian to learn what foods are best for you. Rhea Medical Center offers comprehensive diabetes classes throughout the year.

Here are some basic nutrition tips for diabetics to help get you started:

1. Monitor carbohydrates, which have the most immediate effect on your blood sugar. Carbohydrates are found in the following food groups:

  • Fruit
  • Milk and yogurt
  • Bread and cereal
  • Rice and pasta
  • Starchy vegetables (such as potatoes and carrots)

2. Eat lots of fiber. Fiber plays an important role in the digestive process, reduces heart disease risk, and can improve blood sugars. Fiber can be found in:

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Cooked dried beans and peas
  • Whole grain breads and cereals
  • Brown rice
  • Bran foods

3. Choose foods that are low in fat. You might want to consider eating more:

  • Lean meats (stay away from fried meats)
  • Low-fat dairy products such as low-fat milk and yogurt
  • Low-fat vegetable cooking sprays
  • Low-fat margarines and salad dressings

4. Avoid high-sodium foods, as they can cause high blood pressure. Try to limit your intake of:

  • Salt
  • Boxed potatoes, rice, and pasta
  • Canned meats
  • Canned soups and vegetables
  • Processed and packaged foods
